Quick Europe note
Guten Morgen, Hallo, Bonjour! at 1 Swiss Franc per 10 minutes and a keyboard with the Y and Z keys swapped, and the exclamation point takes me forever to find and I never found the apostrophe, I will make this quick and fill it in later.
We landed in Munich at 9am on Saturday and struggled a bit jet lagged, with street signs that take as longer to sound out than they are in view, never mind finding them on the map, but eventually got our little rental Ford (that should have been an Audi - insert Seinfeld reference here about "reserving" a car) successfully into a car park next to the Oktoberfest ground and hiked it back to our hostel by the train station.
Munich is an incredible city and August is the time to see it. Oktoberfest hasn,t swelled the population yet but the beer is ready :) The biergartens are everywhere - chestnut trees keep the 1 Liter steins and libators our of the sun. We hit the Hopfbrauhaus for the night, the most popular brauhaus in Munich and spent the evening learning Italian from a group of travelers from Verona and a little Polish from a girl whose name I wish I wrote down.
From Munich we drove to see Tina in Garmisch-Partenkirchner. The 1 hour drive is spectacular; the Bavarian Alps are dark and lush except at the peaks which are too steep for anything to grow on them. Garmisch is in a valley and we visited a lake for more mountain views and then to Tina, mother,s house for a Bavarian dinner of snitzle and potatoes and discussed Bavarian culture and reminsced about Australia. She has a wonderful photo album which is something I have to do when I get home.
Garmisch into Innsbruck Austria makes it worth renting a car rather than taking trains: the experience of actually driving through these mountains is visceral. The most noteworthy attraction for this quick note was the cable car ride to a 2996 meter peak in the Austrian Alps from which I,m sure we could see into Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.
This morning I awake in Zürich where we,ve seen Chagal stained glass in a church on the Limmat river. We,ve diverted our trip to see more of Switzerland and we,ll drive to Interlaken today instead of Frankfurt. So tomorrow will be a long day of driving but we,ll still "do lunch" in France on the way to Frankfurt where we will fly to Venice from to meet up with the rest of the crew.
OK, gotta shower and check out. Next stop Interlaken.
Ciao,
Evan
